1. Milan, Italy

Milan, Italy

For a long time, Milan has been known as a European design hub, but lately, Milan is swiftly establishing itself as a major player in the contemporary art world.

The city is primed to become a major art capital, boasting esteemed galleries like Cardi Gallery and MASSIMODECARLO alongside newer arrivals such as the London-founded Cadogan Gallery, Robilant+Voena, and Lehmann Maupin, which recently launched a “seasonal” space. This fall, the renowned European gallery Thaddaeus Ropac will open its first Italian outpost, further solidifying Milan’s artistic appeal.

With collectors and art professionals increasingly gravitating toward Milan, the city is also seeing a surge in creative infrastructure. For example, Soho House, the exclusive members-only club, has announced plans to transform a historic six-story 1930s building, formerly home to Cinema Art, into a dynamic creative hub—further fueling Milan’s rise as a cultural epicenter.

Marrakech is also one of the emerging cities for art in 2025. Marrakech’s vibrant art scene is stunning, further enhanced by its rich history and cultural heritage. This makes the African city an ideal backdrop for contemporary expressions. The lush gardens, bustling souks, and stunning historical landmarks offer inspiration for artists and art lovers alike. The upcoming 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair is poised to highlight this unique intersection of tradition and modernity, showcasing a diverse array of works from emerging and established artists across the continent.

The event will not only feature a range of exhibitions but also host panel discussions, workshops, and networking opportunities aimed at fostering dialogue around contemporary African art. With La Mamounia’s luxurious setting and DaDa’s innovative approach to dining and art, the fair promises to create an immersive experience for attendees. It serves as a platform for artists to engage with a broader audience and for visitors to gain insights into the dynamic landscape of African art today.

As Marrakech continues to establish itself as a cultural nexus, initiatives like the 1-54 fair play a crucial role in connecting local artists with international markets and promoting the city as a key player in the global art scene. By embracing its status as a cultural crossroads, Marrakech is not only celebrating its rich heritage but also paving the way for future generations of artists. Whether you’re an art aficionado or a curious traveler, the city’s upcoming events offer a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of culture, creativity, and commerce in one of Africa’s most captivating cities.

Additionally, the expansion of Moroccan galleries like La Galerie 38 and Loft Art Gallery into Marrakech not only brings fresh talent and innovative curatorial practices to the city but also fosters a collaborative environment for artists, curators, and collectors. This influx of established galleries is likely to attract a broader audience and facilitate cultural exchange, reinforcing Marrakech’s position as a pivotal player in the contemporary art scene.

As these institutions and galleries come together, they contribute to a vibrant cultural ecosystem that celebrates both local and international artistic voices. The interplay between the museum’s curated collection and the dynamic gallery exhibitions will enrich the experiences of art enthusiasts and further solidify Marrakech’s status as a destination for contemporary art lovers from around the world!

The United Arab Emirates (UAE), particularly its city of Abu Dhabi, has emerged as a significant center for international art and culture. Abu Dhabi is poised for a spotlight in 2025 with several major cultural initiatives.

People out there are laying the foundation for a new phase in cultural development, already marked by the success of the Louvre Abu Dhabi. The upcoming openings of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and the Zayed National Museum are highly anticipated and expected to elevate the city’s profile further on the global stage. The Guggenheim’s scale, being twelve times larger than its New York counterpart, signals a significant investment in cultural infrastructure, while the Zayed National Museum will honor the legacy of the UAE’s founding president, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, positioning it as a central piece within the Saadiyat Island Cultural District.

The art fair landscape in Abu Dhabi has also matured considerably over the past two decades, with the latest edition of Abu Dhabi Art showcasing participation from 104 galleries, including a significant number of first-time exhibitors. The involvement of international galleries like Lagos’s kó and London’s JD Malat highlights the fair’s expanding reach and appeal. Speculation about possible investments from well-known art organizations, such as Art Basel, indicates the fair’s growing importance in the art world.

As these developments unfold, Abu Dhabi is set to solidify its status as a hub of contemporary art and culture in 2025, drawing attention from collectors and art enthusiasts around the world.

As the Polish government prioritizes the revitalization of art institutions and infrastructure, Warsaw is rapidly emerging as a significant arts hub in Eastern Europe.

A notable development in this movement is the introduction of NADA Villa Warsaw last year, which has become a prominent fixture in both the local and global art community. Esteemed Warsaw-based gallerists—Michał Kaczyński of Raster, Marta Kołakowska of LETO Gallery, and Joanna Witek-Lipka, the organizer of the Warsaw Gallery Weekend—joined forces to curate this dynamic fair, featuring 44 art galleries and spaces from 25 cities around the world. The event embraced a collaborative exhibition style, held within the historic Villa Gawrońskich, a neo-baroque treasure located in central Warsaw.

On the institutional side of things, what’s being considered the most anticipated creative development in Warsaw is the opening of the first location of Warsaw’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). The new museum will be housed in an impressive 213,000-square-foot building located in the Defilad (Parade) Square. It’s set to open up to the public in February 2025 with a collection of post-war Polish and international art.

India’s second-largest city, Mumbai, is rapidly making a name for itself in the art scene. The Hurun Research Institute notes that the city has overtaken Beijing as the richest city in Asia with 92 billionaires, and this wealth is brewing a new generation of art collectors.

It’s also important to note that Art Mumbai has quickly become the leading event for modern and contemporary art in India’s financial hub since its inception in 2023. The 2024 edition of the fair featured 71 galleries from around the globe at the Mahalaxmi Racecourse, located in the heart of the city. Now entering its third year, the art fair is set to return to the race track this year from November 13th to 16th.

Lastly, as Mumbai attracts an increasing number of international visitors, the local gallery scene is ready for continued expansion. The city boasts spaces such as Jhaveri Contemporary and Nature Morte, along with DAG, which originated in Delhi, and Experimenter, which started in Kolkata. Further enhancing its cultural momentum, the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre opened in late March 2023, establishing a significant art hub for the city. The center focuses on showcasing India’s top artists and presenting innovative international talent to Mumbai, as illustrated by India’s inaugural Pop Art exhibition held in December 2023, solidifying the city’s status as a key cultural center.
