One of the biggest trends at the start of 2023 is the impact of artificial intelligence on content creation. Some companies have publicly announced they’re all in while others have hesitated to discuss their use of AI. But if you’ve been using AI design tools like ChatGPT, Midjourney or Stable Diffusion, then you know there’s one thing everyone agrees on: Generative AI still has a long way to go.
It seems like everyone’s jumping on the debate about the role of AI in graphic design, but no one seems to be asking the bigger picture questions:
- How will you differentiate your AI-generated content from your competitors’?
- What happens when every organization in a sector is using the same databases to generate their designs?
- How will creators be credited and protected from lawsuits for ai generated artwork? (In early 2023, Getty Images opened a lawsuit against an AI generator that was suspected of using unlicensed Getty Images photos to create AI images)
Generative AI can’t create truly new or original content – yet. The AI design tools that currently exist need very descriptive language, and if too many companies use AI platforms, they’ll soon saturate the marketplace with content that all looks similar. There’s no secret recipe, which is why success with generative AI for design will depend on leveraging creative minds like graphic designers and writers to take a creative approach.
